Hall Rental

The Mateel Community Center is an iconic Southern Humboldt landmark and the North Coast’s premier location for events, concerts, theater/ dance performances, speakers, comedy, meetings, and more. Below are general guidelines about hall rental. For pricing information, see our Rental Prices page. For helpful hints and local resources that can assist in planning your event see our Helpful Information page.

About the Hall

Located in the southern Humboldt hamlet of Redway, the Mateel Community Center hall is a showcase of fine woodworking, craftsmanship, and solar design that first opened in 1988. Owned and operated by the MCC, this center is well utilized by the entire community and serves as a venue for both commercial and non-profit rentals, as well as in-house Mateel productions. Easily configurable to host a wide range of events such as seminars, meetings, music concerts, craft fairs, community classes, theatrical performances, weddings, dance recitals, and large-scale dinner events, the Mateel hall is available year-round and is the perfect place for almost any gathering.

The uniquely designed facility features a large, open main floor and wrap-around mezzanine, which allows for a standing capacity of 800, or 300 seated. Our custom designed, portable and expandable stage is 30’x 16’ and can be reconfigured to accommodate a variety of performance requirements. Additionally, the hall and stage can be augmented with a multitude of stage curtain, cyclorama, and video screen options that can be tailored to suit the needs of your event.

The Mateel hall also features a commercial kitchen that is available for rent. Lights and sound services are offered by several local independent contractors, and are not included in the rental of the hall (see our Helpul Information page for a listing of local event contractors and more).

Calendar & Bookings

The calendar is booked on a first-come-first-served basis. There are a large number of annual events that use the facility on the same relative dates each year. Our goal is to maximize usage of the hall and at the same time ensure the community benefits from the highest quality and variety of events and entertainment possible. There is currently a lot of competition for relatively few open dates, especially weekends. We avoid booking events on the same weekend that directly compete for the same audience. For instance: two concerts of the same genre of music, etc.

Hall Renters

The hall is open to be rented by everyone for any variety of purposes, including individuals, non-profit organizations, government agencies, promoters (local and out-of-town), and businesses.

Exceptions:

  • Any individual or business with outstanding debt to the Mateel.
  • The hall manager may use discretion when booking events to provide for compliance with Mateel board & community policies on safety.
  • Any business, nonprofit or forprofit, with a history of past policy violations, disregard for clean-up, or the appropriate treatment of the facilities and respect for our community of neighbors.
  • Out of the ordinary logistical difficulties- unusual set-ups that run back-to-back, or events that we cannot properly staff.
Donated Hall Rentals

The hall is occasionally made available at a reduced fee or donated to other non-profit organizations, community based events, and/or classes. This decision is made on a case by case basis with the underlying premise being these community based events would not be able to happen without MCC support and are in demand by the community we service. Requests must be made in writing on company letterhead (if applicable) and submitted to the Board of Directors for the Mateel Community Center at least thirty days in advance of advertising for the event. Exceptions may be made by the General Manager for special circumstances. All nonprofits are required to provide proof of their 501-3C status. All donations must be noted on advertising materials.

Hours of Operation

In an effort to be considerate to our neighbors, MCC has set the following policies regarding event curfews:

Weeknight music events must conclude by 12am.
Weekend music events must conclude by 2am.

Sold-Out Shows

The capacity of the facility is 800 maximum. Any event that MCC staff determines has the potential to sell-out will be required to use MCC provided wristbands. We have determined the use of MCC wristbands to be the best way to ensure capacity limits. Renters presenting events with a high likelihood of sell out will be subject an additional wristband fee.

Alcoholic Beverages

Any use of alcohol in the building must comply with all state and government law. Only non-profit organizations are eligible to receive an alcohol permit to sell beer and wine. The Board of Directors reviews and will approve or decline all requests for alcohol permits.

Bumping

Occasionally a previously scheduled small event or class will get bumped to accommodate an event that would be of significant community interest (i.e. attract a large number of people). The calendar is also occasionally cleared for repair work necessary on the hall itself. As much as possible, repair work and maintenance on the hall will be scheduled in advance to avoid the necessity of bumping. MCC staff will also work with the class or event that has been bumped to give as much advance notice as possible, find another suitable date, and minimize impact on the bumpee.
