MATEEL FOREVER: REGGAE LEGACY August 13 & 14th, 2022<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two day event honors the impact of the Reggae on the River festival<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reggae on the River presents<\/b> Mateel Forever: Reggae Legacy with the Wailing Souls, Marlon Asher & Mystic Roots.<\/b>  The event takes place Saturday August 13th  and August 14th at the Mateel Community Center, 59 Rusk Lane in Redway<\/strong>. Reggae Legacy honors the impact of the Reggae on the River festival has made both in Southern Humboldt County and on the global reggae scene for nearly four decades. A second day has been added that features a Humboldt County Reggae showcase with Judrum<\/strong>, Irie Rockerz<\/strong>, Mykal Somer<\/strong>, Seed and Soil<\/strong>, DJ’s Justone & Irie Adina<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is all ages, doors are at 4:20pm.  Discounted tickets are on sale now for Saturday, August 13th for $30 in advance, tickets are $35 at the door. Sunday, August 14th tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.  Two day, weekend passes are available for $40 now through Eventbrite<\/a>. Children 12 and under admitted free. The event features food, vendors and a full bar serving those 21 and over.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Wailing Souls:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fusing the harmonies of Motown with the roots and dancehall sounds of reggae,  <\/b>the Wailing Souls<\/b> have ridden the crest of Jamaica\u2019s music for more than four decades.  Lloyd \u201cPipe\u201d McDonald<\/b> and Winston \u201cBread\u201d Mathews<\/b> as The Wailing Souls<\/b>  have been nominated for Grammy Awards on three occasions. The group scored hits with classic roots reggae tunes, War <\/i><\/b>and Bredda Gravlicious<\/i><\/b>, Firehouse Rock,<\/i><\/b> and the 1992 SONY\/BMG album and title track, All Over The World.  <\/i><\/b>The Wailing Souls were the first reggae group to appear on The Tonight Show<\/i> during this period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the group scored number one hits with Things and Time, Jah Jah, Old Broom,<\/i><\/b> and Shark Attack. <\/i>The Wailing Souls\u2019<\/b> recording career has been nothing short of historic. Vocally trained by Bob Marley and the Wailers\u2019 <\/b>teacher, Joe Higgs<\/b>, they worked with legendary reggae producers including Coxsone Dodd<\/b> of Studio One<\/b>, Henry \u2018Junjo\u2019 Lawes<\/b>, Channel One Studios<\/b>, Delroy Wright<\/b>, Lloyd \u2018King\u2019 Jammy\u2019s<\/b>,  recording several early tunes at Bob Marley\u2019s Tuff Gong Studio<\/b>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wailing Souls<\/b> attracted global attention when their music was featured in the 1993 Disney film, Cool Runnings.<\/i><\/b> The soundtrack album was an international hit, selling nearly half a million copies worldwide. The Souls had four songs on this soundtrack including the hit, Picky Picky Head.<\/i><\/b> Formed in Trench Town, Kingston, Jamaica, in the late-1960s, The Wailing Souls<\/b> have experienced numerous transformations. Their discography (over 26 albums to date) includes singles recorded as The Renegades<\/b>, Pipe & the Pipers<\/b>, and Atarra<\/b>. Bread<\/b> appeared in the documentary Marley<\/i><\/b> on the life of Bob Marley, recounting several important aspects of this reggae icon\u2019s life.   Still one of the most powerful forces in Reggae, The Wailing Souls<\/b> continue to tour globally and record new songs with the vigor that they had singing in Kingston\u2019s Trench Town decades ago. The band has influenced the next generations of musicians playing reggae music, Sublime released the song “Pawn Shop” which was an interpolation of their original song “War Deh Round a John Shop”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wailing Souls have performed at numerous festivals on some of the world’s most prestigious stages including the Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spain and Reggae on the River <\/b>in Humboldt County, California where they last appeared in 2018<\/b>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Marlon Asher:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marlon Asher is a reggae artist from Trinidad & Tobago. His breakout hit  \u201cGanja Farmer\u201d<\/b>  released in 2006 has become a worldwide, evergreen reggae classic featured widely on sound systems, by radio hosts and on playlists.  Marlon has performed at several the top music festivals across the globe and has toured with Grammy Award winning artists: Shaggy, Beenie Man, Matisyahu and Slightly Stoopid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marlon Asher has collaborated on recordings with some of the biggest reggae artists & producers in the world including Sizzla, Anthony B, Slightly Stoopid, Pressure Busspipe, Fortunate Youth, Kottonmouth Kings, Don Corleon &  Teflon Zincfence.  During the Covid 19 shutdown Marlon has been in the studio working on singles and his next album scheduled to be released in 2022.  Throughout the pandemic he has performed on live streams and on drive in shows with the band Slightly Stoopid, who he also performed with at California Roots 2022.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Mystic Roots:<\/b>
Formed when the members met in Chico, California this 5-piece band plays originals with two feet solidly in Reggae and adding elements of Hiphop, Pop and Rock to the mix. The band is consistently sharpening their evolving musical arrangements of vocal harmonies and occasional beatboxing that are enhanced by the groups\u2019 female\/male dynamic. The group has been together longer than most other California Reggae bands and have helped to define the \u201cWest Coast Reggae\u201d genre. They\u2019ve had over 4 million plays on their 2000 song \u201cPass The Marijuana\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fronted by Nigerian drum wizard, JuDrum<\/strong>, Seed N Soil <\/strong>weaves a heavy reggae sound into the fabric of Nigerian Afro-beat.   Celebrating 14 years, the band is currently touring Northern California with a new stage show while keeping true to their rootsy foundation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Irie Rockerz<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redway\u2019s own reggae band, they formed in 2015 based on the shared vision of producers and songwriters Stevie Culture and Brody Forester to represent the ideals of the local community of  peace, love and unity combined with musicianship that is sure to get you dancing and having a good time. Stevie Culture is an accomplished recording artist from Jamaica who now calls Humboldt home, he sings lead vocals and plays drums with the band. Brody plays lead guitar and shares lead vocal duties, April Mae is on vocals.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hailing from the island of St. Kitts, Mykal Somer  <\/strong>is a roots, rock, reggae artist with a sing-jay, chant style. Inspired by the musical lyrics of the great Bob Marley <\/strong>and Lucky Dube<\/strong>, his first album Element of Surprise <\/em>was  released in 2005. Mykal has performed alongside with  artists such as Third World , Luciano,  Messenjah Selah, Joseph Israel<\/strong> and saxophonist\/ producer Dean Fraser<\/strong>. Additional single releases include \u201cTry\u201d featuring Travis B<\/strong> of Woven Roots<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
