Coming up on the weekend of June 2nd and 3rd, 2012 the Mateel Community Center will kick off the summer festival season with the 36th annual Summer Arts and Music Festival at Benbow Lake State Recreation Area.
A beloved local tradition to celebrate the arrival of summer, this favorite family event will again offer the most comprehensive and affordable celebration of arts and culture in Humboldt County, with more than 100 diverse performances on 4+ stages, over 150 handmade craft and food booths, an all-media fine arts showcase, outrageous kid zone, the Generation Green Tent, and so much more.
Admission for the festival will be at the gate only for price of $15 per day or $25 for the weekend pass. Kids 12 & under are free. Gates open at 9:30am both days and the fun wraps up at 10pm. Free shuttle service is offered continuously from Redway, Garberville and both Benbow Lake and Richardson Grove campgrounds. A limited amount of paid parking is also available in Benbow.

This year Mateel is working in conjunction with CA State Parks to offer Benbow Lake Campground exclusively to festival attendees. In a secluded redwood and riverside location, reservations for this campground can be made either by the individual or as a group site for up to 8 people and all camping options include a 3 night stay- June 1-3, 2012. Just a short walk from the festival grounds this is also a fantastic place to stay or camp while attending the festival. Stay in your RV or bring a tent and you'll be just steps away festival grounds. In 2004, the RV Resort won the “Best of The West Award,” which means the park was voted the top RV Park in the western United States. The resort also has a top approval rating from Good Sam, Woodall’s and AAA, and is a member of ARVC (the National Association of RV Parks & Campgrounds).

Though several miles south of the festival grounds Richarson Grove State Park offers another great alternative for camping. Richardson Grove is where you first encounter significant old growth redwood forest when coming north. The park offers a variety of summer nature programs during the summer including evening campfire programs, Junior Rangers, and guided nature walks visitor center and nature store are located in the historic 1930's Richards Grove Lodge and are also open in the summer.
