SPARC Program Returns To Mateel, Offering Fine Art and Music Opportunities For Local Youth!

Time to SPARC up the eleven to seventeen year-old after school activities with a little music and art!  Specifically, the SPring Arts Collective will begin the second week in March and will run Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3 to 6:30pm at the Mateel Community Center.  All local youth are invited to attend this series of project driven classes, culminating in the Artists of the Emerald Coast gala at the MCC on April 29, 2017.  Interested class participants and alumni of SPARC are also invited to perform at the Summer Arts and Music Festival and possibly Reggae on the River too!

The popular after school program is open to local youth ages 11-17 and it offers them a chance to work with professional fine artists, Hunter Gilliam and Dianna Anzini, who will lead classes covering mandala design, totem, instrument decor, watercolor, and cartooning.  Professional music instructor and program founder, Cathryn Guillette, oversees the musical component of the program as has broadened the scope to include bass guitar, keyboard, marimba, voice, percussion, and recorder- teaching basic skills, with an emphasis on performance and improvisation. A special session on songwriting and vocals with Arianna Guillette will be offered this year too.  She and fine artist, Serenity Wood, will also function as youth mentors throughout the duration of the program.

The first SPARC session will be held on Tuesday, March 7th and registration is open now, with up to 30 spaces available. There is a sliding scale registration fee of $70-100 for the full program and registrants are expected to register in advance and participate for the entirety of the class schedule. To sign up or ask questions, contact the Mateel Community Center office at 923-3368 or email office@mateel.org. Space is available on a first come, first served basis.
