After the success of their first “Summer Arts Faire” in December of 1976, a group of newly arrived, back-to-the-land hippies, along with a smattering of locals, put together a crafts fair at the old Firemen’s Hall in Garberville and called it “Winter Arts Faire”. It’s moved up the road a stretch since then to the Mateel Community Center in Redway, and now in it’s 40th year, this weekend, December 10th and 11th, it continues to deliver holiday cheer to the folks of southern Humboldt including the back-to-the-landers’ kids and grandkids. This 2-day family event has grown now to feature nearly 50 handmade artisan booths, diverse musical entertainment, children’s storytelling, a delectable holiday menu, and a visit from Santa both days from 1 to 3pm.
Scheduled to perform throughout the weekend are: Humboldt Time, George Mooney, Seabury Gould & Evan Morden, Bob Baker, Zecharia Gravender, Madd Jazz and Bob Baker. To see the full daily line-up, visit the Mateel website at www.mateel.org.
The Winter Arts Faire supports local creative vendors, handcraft artisans, and non-profit organizations and is one of the best holiday shopping opportunities in Humboldt for one-of-a-kind gifts.
Hearty winter fare is the theme of the Winter Arts menu this year with beef rouladen with potatoes and cabbage, lentil soup, veggie chili, quiche, stuffed acorn squash, teriyaki chicken wings. pasta alfredo, turkey & cheese tamales, salad and roasted vegetablesand desserts. Many ingredients are locally sourced and organic. Vegan and gluten free options are available.
The Winter Arts Faire bar will be sponsored by Firestone Walker Brewing Company who’ll be pouring a selection of their microbrewed beers- plus wines and winter warmers like spiked coffee and hot buttered rum. There will be plenty of non-alcoholic warming and refreshing beverages as well.
Winter Arts Faire will be open from 10am to 6pm both days, and is free to MCC members and kids 12 and under. Mateel memberships will be available at the door for those wishing to take advantage of the free admission offer for this event and other event discounts.
